The Web-based A+LS Main Menu

This help page covers:

The Two Web-based A+LS Playback Modes

Browser Playback – The V4 user interfaces, as delivered in their original HTML format. This playback mode includes full support for all embedded A+LS media, including Adobe® Flash®, Adobe Acrobat® and Java™-based activities.

A+LS Client (Webstart) – The familiar V3.5 student and management interfaces, but using a new delivery model. The client software will automatically install the first time its button is selected and will automatically update thereafter. It also places a shortcut on Windows desktops and prompts for one under OS X.

Downloadable Plug-ins and Software

The various Web-based A+LS playback modes require browser plug-ins and some activities require Java. To ensure that you always have access to the latest versions, the main menu links you directly to the master download sites for each.

Download Adobe Flash – Links you to the download page for Adobe Flash, at www.adobe.com.

Download Java – A link to Sun’s download page for Java, at www.java.com.

Download Adobe Acrobat – Links to Adobe’s download page for Acrobat, at www.adobe.com.

Checking Your Browser Settings

The Check Browser Settings command on the toolbar is used to check that your web browser has is properly configured to run the Web-based A+LS playback modes and lesson activities. It is very easy to use, just click on Check Browser Settings to start the testing.

At the Setup Menu screen, click on the Next button, which will walk you through all of the tests. First it will explain what is about to be tested, then you click on the Next button to start the test. It gives you the results and you proceed to the next test. You may be asked to run these tests if you are having problems running any of the Web-based A+LS playback modes.

Also on the Setup Menu screen are options for:

Cookie Test – Manually run the test for browser cookies on your workstation. Your browser must have cookies enabled to work with the Web-based A+LS playback modes.

Cache Test – Manually run the test that checks your brower's cache settings (how it retains temporary files). Your browser should not have caching enabled, otherwise the Web-based A+LS playback modes may not be able to properly update your screen.

Remove Server Side Cookie – If you have problems logging into the A+LS server, select Remove Server Side Cookie to delete your session's temporary data file on the server.

Remove Invalid Session – This applies to stateless sessions, the feature that lets you resume what you were doing after losing your connection to the A+LS server. On rare occasions the session record may become corrupted, preventing you from logging in. If that happens, you can choose to Remove Invalid Session, which may allow you to log in normally.
